CFP--BYRON SOCIETY OF AMERICA--MLA DECEMBER 2003--SAN DIEGO, CA USA
Byron and Gender
This session at the December 2003 MLA meeting aims at assessing the impact
of gender studies, gay studies, and feminism upon the scholarship of
Romanticism in general through the consideration of Byron's case in
particular. Some may wish to treat Byron as our contemporary; others may
prefer to emphasize his era. Papers or proposals might address his
relationship to feminists such as de Stael or Wollstonecraft; the erotics
of his verse; the woman reader and writer; the impact of feminism upon
contemporary Byron scholarship; the influence of gay studies or gender
theory upon our reading of his major works; the question whether to
understand Byron as essentially homosexual or bisexual--and whether this
distinction is or is not crucial to reading him. Any proposal or paper
that deals with some aspect of gender and Byron is welcome. Send 1-page
abstracts or 8-page papers by 15 March to Paul Douglass, Chair, Department
of English & Comparative Literature, San Jose State University, San Jose,
CA 95192-0090 [pdouglas_at_email.sjsu.edu].
NOTE: All program participants must be members of MLA by April 1, 2003.
The MLA membership requirement may be waived for participants who reside
outside the United States and Canada.
