Genet in Performance
University of East Anglia
17th & 18th October 2003
Call for papers
The Drama department within the School of English & American Studies at the
University of East Anglia in Norwich is looking to host a Jean Genet
Symposium in October 2003. The Symposium to be called Genet in Performance
will be held in the purpose-built Drama Studio, opened by Harold Pinter in
1994. The aim of the Symposium is to celebrate Genet's contribution to
experimental theatre/performance practices in the latter half of the
twentieth century.
The event, scheduled to take place on the weekend of the 17th & 18th
October, will comprise six panels, performances and a series of practical
workshops.
Call for Papers
We welcome proposals on all aspects of Genet's performance practice:
theatre, film, ballet and documentary work. Papers that address Genet's work
practically may be published in the TDR. Ideas for this might include: Genet
in translation; directing Genet; dilemmas of the Genettian actor; a concrete
approach to Genettian mise-en scène and/or accounts of recent productions by
practitioners of his work in either French or English. In keeping with this
remit, workshop sessions are also encouraged and should provide a basic
summary of content and duration. This focus on performance and
'performability' is not meant, however, to dissuade those interested in
adopting a more theoretical approach to Genet's drama. Much remains to be
done, for instance, on the following aspects of Genet's theatre: its
political value; its influence on post-structuralist thinkers in France; its
relationship with Brecht and Beckett; and its capacity for provoking trauma
and anxiety. Speakers: Professor David Bradby, Albert Dichy, Joseph Strick,
Professor Ramamoorthi and Professor Ralph Yarrow.
Proposals
Individual paper proposals or proposals for workshops should consist of a
brief abstract (1-2 pages) of the proposed paper/workshop, the paper title,
and the name, e-mail address, mailing address, telephone number, and
institutional affiliation of the participant. Audio-visual requirements
should also be included. Submission by e-mail is preferred.
Papers should be no longer than 20 minutes in length for three-person
panels, or 15 minutes in length for four-person panels.
Deadline for submission of proposals: March 16th 2003.
