Revisiting Modernism and Madness

Histories of modernism and madness often tell of hysteria, neurasthenia, and
shell shock. For a proposed Special Session at the 2003 MLA Convention in
San Diego, I seek abstracts of talks that offer alternative histories of
early twentieth-century psychical dissolution.

I will consider proposals that concern hysteria, neurasthenia, and shell
shock, but am especially interested in work that is being done on other
manifestations of ³madness² in the early twentieth century.

Speakers accepted to the panel will need to be members of the MLA by April
7, 2003; the convention will be held from 12/27/03-12/30/03.

1-page abstracts (no complete papers or longer proposals) by March 15 to
