Critical Orthodoxies, Old and New

Paper proposals on the topic of orthodoxy in criticism are now being
accepted for a literary criticism panel at the Rocky Mountain MLA
Convention, October 9-11, 2003, in Missoula, Montana. A wide range of
proposals will be considered, but those addressing one or more of the
following questions are especially welcome:

----------------------------------------------------------

* Through what forces does the orthodox originate and become accepted?

* How do we recognize critical orthodoxy or an orthodox work of criticism?

* What happens when competing orthodoxies come into conflict?

* Are past critical orthodoxies no longer viable?

* Are present or past critical orthodoxies as stable, hegemonic, and
uniform as this term suggests?

* What roles do critical messiahs, high priests, apostles, apostates,
heretics, and reactionaries play, and who plays or has played them?

* What are some of the challenges of critical historiography in the
context of orthodoxy, from the representation of paradigm shifts to the
interrogation of institutional power in the historical process?

* What are or have been the effects of debates within specific critical
schools, such as Marxism and psychoanalysis, that have had a strong
investment in the notion of orthodoxy? When, how, and why have their
orthodoxies been challenged, by whom, and with what results?

----------------------------------------------------------

The 2003 RMMLA convention will be held from October 9-11 in beautiful
Missoula, Montana, home of the local host for the conference, the
University of Montana.

Proposals based on a 300-word abstract are due to the session chair no
later than March 10, 2003. Chairs will notify those who submitted
proposals of their acceptance or rejection by March 15, 2003.

Proposals sent via email are preferred. Send your proposal in plain text
