CFP: Inn Empire: Lodging 19th-Century British Travelers (03/21, MLA)
Contributions are sought for a proposed special session on 'Inn Empire:
Lodging 19th-Century British Travelers' for the MLA 2003 convention,
27-30 December, San Diego.
Paper topics might include but are not limited to:
* traveler's tales from the formal and informal empire
* 'bad' experiences of travel in the colonial world
* representations of inns, hotels, dak bungalows, oases, and the like in
novels, poems, and other narratives
* hotels as alternate forms of domesticity for those living abroad; women
tourist's experiences
* depictions of hostels for European sailors overseas and foreign or
colonial sailors at home
* advertising about hotels, resorts, or spas
* discussions of hotel design and catering; Victorian vouchers and guided
tours.
Contributions offering a comparative angle on lodgings and empire in
French, German, Dutch, Portuguese, or Spanish texts/contexts are also
welcome.
Please send abstracts of 500 words (or completed papers) and a short CV by
