Following the recent Exxon-Mobil decision to withdraw funding, we invite
abstracts that consider Masterpiece Theater as a cultural phenomenon. What
is its place in the public imagination? Who watches it? How does it
contribute to/complicate public perception of the literary works it adapts?
Topics may include but are not limited to the following:
* Cultural literacies
* Canon formation and revision
* Public television as private interest
* Alistair Cooke vs. Russell Baker
* As pedagogical tool (in the classroom, on the web)
* The American Collection
* Responses to specific adaptations/productions
