Call for Participation
CommUnion 2003: Reconsidering Spaces, Recreating Selves
Hosted by the Beta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta,
(The National Communication Honors Society)
April 25 and 26, 2003 at NC State University, Raleigh, NC
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Rebecca Adams, Professor of Sociology at
UNC-Greensboro, will address the relationships between spatial
organization and identity within the Grateful Dead fanculture.
Undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines are invited to
present qualitative and quantitative academic research, participate in
discussion panels, and exhibit their creative media products.Like the
past LPE-sponsored conferences, this year's event will include the
presentation of research papers.
Our theme for 2003 is "Reconsidering Spaces, Recreating Selves". In the
post-9/11 world, there appears to be even more of an emphasis on
"spaces" and "selves" -- or rather, our cultural spaces (and artifacts),
and our identit(y/ies). It is our hope that the films, performance
studies, papers and panel discussions at CommUnion 2003 will interrogate
--and perhaps encourage new ways of understanding -- these ideas.
The rationale for CommUnion's broad interdisciplinary inclusion is
rooted in the core conference goal: To encourage a new agenda for
knowledge acquisition and diffusion by promoting and encouraging the
ability to build community through cooperative scholarship.
In recent years, students from Davidson College, North Carolina Central
University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill -- in
addition to those students from North Carolina State University -- have
participated in this conference.
The projects, portfolios, posters, and papers presented at CommUnion
should attempt to bridge the gap between two or more disciplines and
exhibit an understanding of the interdependent relationship between
them. Those which address the conference theme will be given preference,
but all submissions will be considered.
All methodological approaches are welcome. Items to be considered
include reports of original research including case studies; critical
essays, posters, portfolio selections, panel discussion proposals,
multimedia projects, film/video/audio productions, short performances,
honors projects/theses, and consulting projects. Non-traditional
presentation formats are welcome! Note: Panel Discussions require a
faculty sponsor/moderator and a statement of purpose.
Proposals should translate into 15 minutes of presentation time (7-8
pages); those interested in displaying posters or portfolio selections
are asked to write a brief explanation of their projects and to outline
their space/display needs.
There is no registration fee. All participants will receive a conference
program, complimentary continental breakfast, and a frame-ready
certificate of participation. Discounted lodging will be available at a
local hotel, and a post-conference group dinner is planned for Saturday
evening. Details will be announced at http://www.ncsu.edu.lpe in the
near future.
Applicants should submit a title and abstract or project description
before April 11, 2003 to:
