CALL FOR PAPERS: Humanitech Graduate Student Conference
University at Albany, State University of New York Saturday, April 26, 2003
"Humanity and Culture in the Age of Technology"
The HumaniTech Initiative at the University of Albany (SUNY) is
envisioned as a unique institutional framework dedicated to advancing
exchange between the humanities and sciences, and serving as a forum
providing the university community and wider region with a nationally
competitive model of intellectual debate and educational innovation.
HumaniTech's mission is to revitalize the humanities and to promote
vigorous intellectual exchange with the sciences at a time of dramatic
technological advancement and scientific development. HumaniTech aims to
transform and expand the humanities into a dynamic cultural legacy that
engages in sustained, interactive conversations and programs across
disciplines and professions. The Initiative seeks to establish new funding
streams to support the arts and humanities in a global culture to enable
scholarship and research at the borders where the humanistic disciplines
intersect with those of science and technology. HumaniTech will develop
innovative learning environments and curricula that cannot evolve within
traditional disciplinary boundaries and will integrate the University at
Albany's programs with other regional, national, and international
resources and initiatives in the humanities.
As part of the University at Albany's "HumanitechSemester," we seek
papers that explore the cultural and theoretical issues that arise between
the Humanities and Technology. How do the Humanities/Technology transform,
supplement, or challenge each other? What forms of subjectivity or
cultural practices emerge from their intersection? What theoretical or
practical implications arise in areas that are affected by the
intertwining of technology with social and cultural space?
The topic for the conference is open to all disciplines. We seek papers
dealing with interdisciplinary research or seeking new perspectives in
regard to "humanities" and/or "technology." Suggested topics include:
The effects of new technology/media on "culture"
Intersections between technology and gender/sexuality
Uses of technology within the arts
Technology and ethics

The depiction of technology in literature and the arts
