CALL FOR PANEL AND PAPER PROPOSALS
Chicana/o Culture: Literature, Film, Theory
Announcing the International Colloquium for Vernacular, Hispanic,=20
Historical, American, and Folklore Studies in Puebla, Mexico, from=20
October 9-12, 2003. The Colloquium will be hosted by the Instituto de=20
Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades of the Autonomous University of Puebla.=20=
Presenters will be converging on the city from Latin America, the United=20=
States, and other parts of the world. The program and its panels tend to=20=
be both multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary, and panels and=20
individual papers in this area may explore issues relevant to Chicana/o=20=
cultural studies.
Presentations might traverse cultural distinctions within genres, such=20=
as corridos, mitos, folklore, poetry, fiction, drama, radio, television,=20=
film, digital media. Topics might examine themes relevant to Chicana/o=20=
culture including but not limited to =93resistance and affirmation=94;=20=
nationalism and ethnic separatism; borders, frontiers, and=20
territorialization; labor unions and social collectivity; machismo,=20
feminidad, feminisms, and gender construction; immigration, internal=20
colonialism, and indigenismo; religion and spirituality; mainstream=20
depictions and ethnic stereotyping; La Raza Cosmica and cultural=20
syncretism. Presentations might cover theoretical and/or creative=20
and/or historical works by individual authors such as Jose Vasconcelos,=20=
Rudy Acuna, Luis Valdez, George I. Sanchez, Gloria Anzaldua, Ana=20
Castillo, Cherrie Moraga, and others. Proposals that address any aspect=20=
of Chicana/o culture are welcome.

The deadline for submitting panel and paper proposals is May 5, 2003,=20
but early paper proposals find the most compatible panels. To=20
participate, submit a 100- to 200-word abstract to the area chair; if=20
submitting by email, please include an attachment as well as a pasted=20
copy. Please also be sure to include a presentation title and your=20
preferred current postal-mailing address and academic/professional=20
affiliation.
