Call for papers for a seminar at the British Shakespeare Association Inaugural
Conference, De Montfort University, Leicester, August 29-31 2003.

Shakespearean Childhoods: Representing and Addressing Children in
Shakespeare’s Works and Afterlife

What is Shakespearean about childhood? This seminar will seek answers to this
question by considering both representations and figurations of childhood in
Shakespeare’s plays and poems, and adaptations and appropriations of
Shakespeare that have been addressed to, made by, or focused on, children.
Papers are invited that address the topic from a variety of theoretical
perspectives, in relation to print, visual, and electronic media, and across a
range of historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts.
