The Black Theatre Network Presents a Call for:
                 Papers, Panels, Presentations, and Workshops

17th Annual Black Theatre Network Conference
"They Keep Comin'!": Black Theatre Celebrates Life Against All Odds
      August 2 - 5, 2003 Winston-Salem, North Carolina
 ***********************************************************************

The Black Theatre Network would like to encourage theatre students,
faculty, artists and anyone who has interest, scholarship and investment
in Black Theatre to contribute a paper proposal for this year's 17th
annual conference. Every other year, we meet in Winston-Salem, North
Carolina just prior to and directly leading into the National Black
Theatre Festival, a soul-stirring, fulfilling event full of Black Theatre
you cannot miss!

Students! This conference is for you, too! Please see below and pay
particular attention to the S. Randolph Edmonds Young Scholars Competition
and Judy Dearing Design Prizes (You can win cash money! Bling, Bling,
baby! See details below!).

This year's conference theme emerges from the play, _Don't Bother Me I
Can't Cope_ by Micki Grant and Vinnette Carroll, who unabashedly proclaim
that "They keep comin'" no matter what happens and who tries to stop them.
We invite educators and artists to explore current practices in the
development, nurturing and sustenance of Black Theatre Artists and
Audiences. What makes you "keep comin'" with your art? What makes the
audience "keep comin'" back? And why is it so necessary for young
thespians to capture the spirit of "They Keep Comin'?"

Specific areas of concentration include but are not limited to:
Film
Psychodrama
Building a Theatre Company
Theatre Pedagogy
New Works & Theatrical Expressions
Female Pioneers

Proposals should include:
Synopsis (indicate panel, workshop, presentation or performance)
Chair, Moderator or Workshop Leader
Intended audience
Other panel participants
Any technical or audiovisual needs

Where: Winston-Salem, NC Adams-Mark Hotel

When: Saturday, August 2 through Tuesday, August 5, 2003

This conference will provide:
*TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES - 90 minute Workshops for Actors/Designers

*PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Analysis of Teaching & Artistic Practice

*RECRUITMENT- Audition and Interview opportunities for students and
faculty, alike. BTN also has a "STUDENTQUEST" program specifically
designed to fulfill the need for exposing students to Black Theatre
experts and developing their skills in any area. STUDENTQUEST is an
opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in a
variety of workshops conducted by Master Teachers focusing on different
aspects of theatre, from acting and directing to design and dramaturgy.

*ANNUAL AUCTION: Memorabilia and artifacts, some highlighting Black
Theatre History and Black Film History, donated to BTN and auctioned off
to the highest bidder. These have often included tickets to Broadway
plays, autographed items from your favorite celebrities and treasured
artifacts from the Black experience.

*PAPERS- Proposals should be 1-2 pages typed, double-spaced, clearly
outlining any audio-visual requirements.

*The Black Theatre Network also offers the S. RANDOLPH EDMONDS YOUNG
SCHOLARS PAPER COMPETITION for both Undergraduate and Graduate Students of
any ethnic background. Winners of the competition will be published in the
conference edition of BTNews and will have a focused session on their
essay with some of the greatest scholars in Black Theatre studies. This
type of attention and interaction is invaluable to all parties involved.

Winners will receive: $250 first place; $100 second place PLUS one night
in the conference hotel for your attendance at the annual awards luncheon.

Both winners will also receive an All-Expense Paid Trip to the 2004
Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Last year's winners will
be enjoying their time at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. this
April!

Students, get your papers together. Professors and Instructors, please
