----'English: The Condition of the Subject' . An International three-day Conference
Senate House, University of London, July 17-19 2003
Reading and the resistance to reading
Further to Jo Gill and Alan Brown's recent article in the English Subject Centre Newsletter (4 [September 2002]), contributions are invited to a "round-table" session on "Reading and the resistance to reading" which we are hosting at the 'Condition of the Subject' conference in London in July.
We are interested in informal contributions from colleagues or interested parties on any aspect of undergraduate reading. What do undergraduate students of English read? What do they read for pleasure? How do we define this pleasure and distinguish (if at all) between instrumental and pleasurable reading? How much reading should undergraduates be expected to do? To what extent should schools of English stipulate or monitor their students' reading? What expectations do lecturers in English have of their students' reading habits and are these shared by the student body? What factors influence undergraduate reading? For example, does the internet have a role? Are 'Widening Participation' strategies relevant? What effect does the adoption of comprehensive anthologies have?
These are just a few of the questions which have arisen as we have started to work on this project. For broader discussion see:
http://www.english.ltsn.ac.uk/discussion/index.htm
We are interested in any interpretation of the area. If you would like to participate please send or e-mail a brief outline (200 words) of your area of interest to: J.R.Gill@ex.ac.uk
OR:
Dr Jo Gill University of Exeter School of English Queen's Building Queen's Drive Exeter EX4 4QH
The deadline for expressions of interest is: 30 April 2003.
Many thanks
Jo Gill (University of Exeter) Alan Brown (University of Gloucestershire)
