SAMLA Annual Convention 14-16 Nov. 2003.
New Panel: German-American Literatures and Cultures (SAMLA 2003).
Along with the boom of ethnicity studies in recent years, German-American
Studies have gathered fresh momentum as well. A lot of research has been
done in the fields of migration and related socio-historical studies.
However, a re-reading of German-American literatures is only in its germinal
stages. The panel seeks to explore the German-American presence from the
colonial era through 2002. I invite papers on different topics of the
German-American experience including but not limited to: German involvement
in early American colonial literature and culture, religious aspects and
their mediation in American culture, gender and class questions in
German-language texts, and the textual positioning of German-language
immigrants on questions of racism, multiculturalism, war, and democracy in
general.
Please send one-page proposals and a brief cv as e-mail attachments to
Karsten Kummer, <kkummer@uni-bremen.de> by April 20. Decisions will be
announced by April 30, 2003.
