CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Conference on College Composition and Communication 2004 Pre-conference
Feminist Workshop
"Feminism? Womanism? Gender Studies? Where Are We Now and How Do We Matter?"

The 2004 CCCC Annual Convention scheduled for March 24 -27, 2004, in San
Antonio, Texas is entitled "Making Composition Matter: Students, Citizens,
Institutions, Advocacy." The diversity of San Antonio, with its long
history as a cultural crossroads, provides a dynamic setting for a
discussion of transformation.

At the convention's feminist workshop, we hope to connect to the overall
theme by addressing the question of how feminists "matter" in various
sites, and how our descriptions of ourselves continue to change, whether by
personal choice or as dictated by changing curriculums. How do we, as
feminists, matter to the field of composition? To students and
colleagues? To departments undergoing constant program assessment? To the
public's perception of what a faculty member ought to be? How do we define
our professed identity/identities? How are we perceived as professionals?

We plan to arrange a full-day session that will retain much of the
organizational structure of previous years in terms of combining formal
presentations with informal round table discussions. We would like to
retain the flexibility that marked last year's workshop, so, as stated
above, all proposals relative to feminism and composition are welcome. At
the same time, we hope to solicit lead off speakers who will directly
address the issues raised in the prompt. We are interested in papers that
bear witness to the difficulties that may be encountered as we attempt to
do the work required of composition instructors in academic environments.
Those difficulties implicate how we define our work in the classroom, with
our colleagues, with organizations that earn our affiliations, and within
the relationships we have with those who are not affiliated with the academy.

Please let us know if you would like to speak directly to any of these
issues and be considered for one of the lead off positions.

We are working with a very short deadline. We need to receive proposals by
April 28. Please email your proposal as an MS Word attachment to both
chairs since we are working long distance: Amy A. Childers (aac@tamu.edu)
and Nels P. Highberg (highberg.1@osu.edu).

Proposals should include:
=B7 Name
=B7 Institution
=B7 Home address
=B7 Office phone
=B7 Email address
=B7 Fax

You should also indicate the following:
=B7 If you are a first-time presenter at CCCC
=B7 Title of your presentation
=B7 Summary of presentation (as long as you would like)
A one or two sentence ABSTRACT for us to use in our collective proposal to
NCTE.

"I think I spent so many years feeling alienated myself that it's a thrill
to me to have violence and death and crime and justice discussed like it's
a normal part of life. Because it is." --Alice Sebold, Entertainment
