CENTRAL NEW YORK CONFERENCE ON LANGUAGE & LITERATURE, October 26-28, 2003,
hosted by the English Department of Cortland College, SUNY.

In their article “Screaming Divas”, Rebecca Pope and Susan Leonardi ask “Are
there differences between the texts of collaborators who acknowledge to
themselves and each other that part of the pleasure of joint composing is
the composing of the couple-is, in other words, an erotic pleasure-and the
texts of women who don’t see the project in those terms, who don’t feel an
erotic energy at work?” (269) They respond humorously by asking “Anyone
need a dissertation topic?” This panel seeks to suggest some preliminary
answers to that question and others posed by lesbian collaborative texts.

Other questions to consider include:
How do difference and desire operate in these texts?
Is lesbian collaboration always politically progressive?
Is there a distinct relationship to the body or to boundaries?
How do two women write the body?
If the spectre of lesbianism has haunted women’s collaborations, how does
overt, avowed homosexuality inform texts and their response?
How does lesbian co-authorship affect existing theories of authorship
generally and women’s authorship in particular?

Analysis of lesbian co-authorship in any genre, period, or place is welcome.
Articles that consider implicit collaborations such as that between
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas are also welcome.
