The University of Sunderland together with Tyneside Irish Festival are
jointly hosting a conference and cultural event entitled ,'Representing
Ireland: Past Present and Future, over the weekend of the 24th to 26th
October 2003. The conference invites various perspectives on Irish literature
and will include plenary lectures by leading scholars in the field such as
Terry Eagleton, Stephen Regan and Shaun Richards. We will also include poetry
readings from, among others Bernard O'Donohue.
The conference is part of a programme of events scheduled for the
Tyneside Irish Festival. These include music, dancing, storytelling, drama
and film. The Sunderland conference itself will include entertainment from
the festival throughout, and will culminate in sung Gaelic mass at St
Dominic's in memory of Father Herbert McCabe.
Proposals on any aspect of Irish Literature are welcome. To propsie
a twenty minute paper for the conference, please send a 300 word abstract, by
20th June 2003, preferably by e-mail or floppy disc to:
