Performance Studies Focus Group Pre-Conference
The Performance Studies Focus Group (PSFG) of ATHE (Association for Theatre
in Hugher Education) is pleased to announce its first ever pre-conference,
"Discipline or Perform: Performance Studies in its Global Contexts." This
exciting pre-conference will be held all day on Wednesday, July 30th and the
morning of Thursday, July 31st at the City University of New York (CUNY)
Graduate Center at 365 5th Avenue.
Performance Studies has been a debated and contested term which has been
employed in many different contexts and with many different meanings.
Whether coming from theatre, philosophy, ethnography, art history, or any
one of a number of varied disciplines and backgrounds, contemporary life has
undergone a turn to "performance." This pre-conference will engage a variety
of scholars, practitioners, and students to explore ideas that intersect
within the term Performance Studies.
The pre-conference will begin and end with roundtable sessions featuring
invited participants, who will lead a discussion interrogating several of
the current areas of debate within the field. The opening roundtable will
address the relation of Performance Studies to a variety of other fields and
disciplines, including Philosophy, Visual Culture, Music, and Dance. The
concluding round table will focus on the place of Performance Studies in
relation to Theatre Studies, and the place of PS within ATHE. We will then
break down into smaller "working groups," that will address a variety of
individual topics in the field with the goal of each creating a presentation
to share with the other working groups at the end of the pre-conference.
Confirmed Speakers and Working Group Chairs include: Philip Auslander, Henry
Bial, Marvin Carlson, Jessica Chalmers, Una Chaudhuri, Laurie Beth Clark,
John Emigh, Jon Erickson, Susan Manning, Bonnie Marranca, Jon McKenzie,
Michael Peterson, Martin Puchner, Nancy Reilly-McVittie, Joe Roach, and
David Savran.
Working Groups will include:
· Discipline or Methodology: Performance Studies in the Curricular Context
· Internationalism and Performance Studies
· Bureaucracy: The role of Performance Studies in Scholarly Organizations
· Curation: Performance Studies in the World of Art Organizations
· Down Under: What We Learned from PSi9 in New Zealand
· Canonicity: "Basic Books: Is there a Performance Studies Canon?"
· Performance Studies and Performance History
The pre-conference will begin at 11am on Wednesday, July 30th, with
registration scheduled to begin at 10am. The opening keynote/roundtable will
run until 1pm with working groups then continuing until 5pm. After this,
there will be a reception and then a variety of suggested performance
options. Thursday morning, we will reconvene at 9am for the presentation of
the findings from the working groups and final discussion from the
concluding roundtable. (Please note the slight time change from the ATHE
News.)
Before July 1, pre-registration for ATHE/AATE members is $15. For
non-members, pre-registration is $25 until July 1. After that date, members
