                           DIRECTOR PREPARATION
                               March 4th-7th
                           Allerton Crowne Plaza
                                Chicago, IL

MATC Directing Symposium seeks proposals for papers that investigate past
and present approaches to director training and development. We invite
papers that critique issues and experiences involved in becoming a director
and developing as a theatre artist. Questions we hope to address in this
symposium include:

What goes into the development and preparation of a director?
What skills are being / ought to be taught to beginning directors?
What types of training exist and for what ends?
How can / do the worlds of academic and professional theatre
intersect?

How does corollary theatre training (acting, design, etc.) inform
director training?
How can current trends in training in the other arts (music, dance,
art, etc.) influence director training?
What can we learn from other fields (communication studies,
psychology, business management, literary theory,
etc.) about director training?

What can we learn from research on the development of noted
directors?
What models or metaphors for "the director" can / do inform director
preparation?
What factors influence the continued artistic development of
directors?
How do directors prepare for particular directing projects?

How does teaching directing inform a director's work?
What special issues are faced by directors working primarily in
academic theatre?
What are the special challenges faced by student directors?
What is the place of a directing course in the liberal arts, teacher
certification, and/or BFA curricula ?

Please send 150-250 word abstracts with a cover letter including
applicant's name, academic affiliation, address, telephone number, and
e-mail address. Final papers should not exceed 9 pages or 2500 words.
