CALL FOR PAPERS
Felliniana: An International Conference Celebrating Fellinišs Cultural
Legacy, October 28- November 1, 2003 University of Washington, Seattle.
The University of Washington announces Felliniana: An International
Conference Celebrating Fellinišs Cultural Legacy, to be held October
28-November 1, 2003, on the occasion of the ten year anniversary of Federico
Fellinišs death and the fortieth anniversary of the release of 8 1/2.
Whether as director, artist, public or private persona, icon or iconoclast,
Fellini epitomizes the auteur, the controlling and creative force whose
personal stamp speaks to and for a movement, a nation, and a generation.
For artists who have followed in his wake, Fellini stands as a milestone, an
inspiration, and sometimes an obstacle. For scholars the difficulty of
gauging the significance of his place in cinematic history is superseded by
the difficulty of separating the man from his works.
In an effort to contribute to an ongoing evaluation of the challenges posed
and the precedents set by Fellini, this interdisciplinary conference will
bring together artists and experts on cinema to examine the directoršs life
and legacy, with consideration of transformations in cinema before and after
him, such as shifts away from Neorealist principles towards increasingly
fantastic, stylized and self-reflexive cinema.
With the participation of several Seattle-area cultural organizations, the
conference will also host film screenings, an exhibit featuring original
drawings by the director, and concerts of film music by Nino Rota and Nicola
Piovani.
Festivities commence October 28-29 with an open colloquium for which we
request abstracts for papers addressing any of the following suggested
topics:
* Fellinišs influence(s) and contemporaries
* The auteur and his collaborators
* Inter/transnational cinema before and after Fellini
* Cinematic cityscapes/ landscapes/ public spaces
* Movements beyond neorealism
* Globalization and commercialization
* The directoršs aesthetics
* Nostalgia, memory, history
* Fascism
* Performativity; spectacle
* Fellinišs critics; trends in Fellini scholarship
Please submit abstracts of 250-500 words to the conference selection
committee at felliniana@u.washington.edu by August 31, 2003.
