Introduction to Literary Studies: New Ideas, New Pedagogy
While departments of English reconsider what literature is and how it is
to be studied, how do we introduce our students to the study of English?
There is no longer, if there ever was, agreement on a canon of
literature, the methodologies of its study, its function or purpose, or
even what literature is. How, then, can we prepare our students for the
study of literature/writing today? What used to function as a gateway
course for the major, the traditional "Introduction to Literature"
course may no longer be an appropriate course for the discipline, even
though anthologies abound that emphasize "formal elements" and genre. I
would like the panel to explore the questions: How can an "Introduction
to Literature" or "Introduction to Literary Studies" course serve the
purposes of the general study of literature or writing as it is
practiced in the discipline today? Is another, more theoretical model
more suitable to introducing students to the language and conceptual
constructs within which we discuss the aesthetic, cultural and social
value of texts? How can this be accomplished? Should the course teach
the "conflicts" and debates to students? Should it include research
into literary criticism, which often presupposes knowledge of complex
theoretical terminology, or should it focus on "intrinsic" criticism?
Is there still a value to teaching formal elements and devices as well
as literary terms at the introductory level? Ideally, I would like to
have papers include a sound theoretical justification for such a course
and also include practical pedagogical suggestions.
Email submissions are welcome.
