Call for Papers: NEMLA 3/3/04-3/7/04
Proposal Deadline: September 15, 2003
Muscular Modernism
This panel will address the conjunction of flesh and force in the art,
literature, and culture of the Modernist era.
Papers that examine the question of what "Modernism" has to do with the
aesthetics, politics, erotics, and ethics of muscularity are welcome---as
are those that examine ephemeral popular texts and the material culture of
the Modernist period in order to discover how fleshly embodiment was being
imagined, controlled, or transformed at this crucial historical conjuncture.
Applicants must be members of NEMLA by October, 2003.
