The Possibilities of Religious Performance in Changing Contexts
The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) 2004 Conference
Toronto, July 29th-August 1st, 2004
This panel invites papers that explore the possibilities raised when
religious drama is performed in new contexts. What issues are at stake when
religious theatre is translated across time, space, language, audience,
historical moment, etc.? Do unique concerns, problems, chances, or
opportunities arise when theatre that is religious changes context? How have
these been resolved by playwrights, directors, actors, designers, and
audiences throughout history? How has theatre been used to forge new
religious identities or maintain religious identity in new environments? How
has theatre changed religious context and still found efficacy and meaning?
When have individuals or groups found the need to employ religious theatre
from different contexts for their unique purposes? Can religious theatre
lose its “religion”? Is religious theatre particularly effective for forging
international identities? How do religious performances inspire identity
across local and global contexts? Papers from all historical, cultural,
religious, and performance contexts are welcome. Please send your one-page
abstract to Jill Stevenson at jc_stevenson@hotmail.com. Please include your
name, affiliation, the title of your paper, and your email address with the
submission. The deadline for abstracts is October 5th.
