Plots of Instruction (9/15/03; ASECS 3/24-28/04)

This seminar seeks submissions from multiple disciplinary perspectives exploring the ways that
eighteenth-century authors enlist the resources of narrative emplotment in service of didactic
projects. What kinds of plots do eighteenth-century authors find congenial to their purposes (e.g.
exemplary vs. cautionary tales)? To what uses do authors put such plots? How does the use of
narrative plot enable (or perhaps problematize) the task of instruction? In addition to papers on
fiction or drama, submissions are particularly welcome on topics like eighteenth-century
historiography, journalism, divinity, and moral philosophy.

Please send brief abstracts by September 15, either by email (Ben.Pauley@oberlin.edu) or by
