Studio Ghibli Panel
This panel offers the opportunity for scholars to consider the
impressive and popular appeal of films produced through the Japanese
animation studio, Ghibli. At the forefront is MIYAZAKI Hayao, who most
recently has received international acclaim in both the United States
(an Oscar for best animated film) and in Germany (tied for the Golden
Bear) for his work, Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi).
However, Miyazaki has been for many years a critical and economic
success both in his native Japan as well as in other Asian countries. In
addition, with the release of some of his animated works in the United
States through a highly publicized deal with Disney, there is rising
interest in discussing his body of works. I propose a panel consisting
of three to four papers that can cover a range of diverse topics about
Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki. While time is limited to discuss the
director's entire opus, I would like a great variety of scholarly
approaches to be represented. Such as:
History of Studio Ghibli
Miyazaki and Myth
Miyazaki and the Environment
Isao Takahata's Sentimental Dramas
Joe Hisaishi's Music in Studio Ghibli Productions
Studio Ghibli and the American Fan
The Girl Heroes in Miyazaki's Films
The Studio Ghibli Museum (opened in October, 2001)
And many more ideas about specific films
Deadline for Submission: August 30, 2003
