CALL FOR PAPERS
for the upcoming conference:

For The Love of Words: Aboriginal Writers of Canada
September 30-October 2, 2004
University of Manitoba
Winnipeg, MB, Canada
Hosted by the Department of Native Studies

The study of the literature by Aboriginal writers in Canada has often
been subsumed under categories, patterns, and themes that fail to
recognize the unique styles, imaginations, tropes, and metaphors of
individual authors. This conference seeks to explore and highlight the
aesthetic richness of the texts and the fluid nature of language. It
will bring together writers and scholars respectively engaged in
artistic and critical appreciation of "the love of words" in Aboriginal
literatures.

A variety of critical perspectives and/or themes are encouraged;
however, papers should discuss an Aboriginal (particularly, First Nation
and Metis) author and/or work(s) with particular emphasis on uniqueness,
nuance, complexity, and creativity of the writer/writing. Some themes
that may emerge include:

* language and style
* audience and community
* standards of literary evaluation
* resistance aesthetics
* genres and genders
* space and borders

We invite submissions of three (3) copies of either 300-500 words
proposals or completed papers. Please include a 100 word abstract and a
brief bio-bibliographical note. Also kindly submit an email or a
computer disk with the same information. The deadline for submissions is
April 1, 2004.

Submission may be sent to either
