The Anchoritic Society is sponsoring three sessions at the 39th
International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, MI, May 6-9, 2004:
1. Space and Time in the Anchorhold: concepts of enclosure and enclosed
space, as well as isolation and solitude in their tangible and spiritual
forms; the perception of time among anchoritic authors (and their subjects).
Please send abstracts of twenty-minute papers
2. The Reception and Adaptation of Anchoritic Literature: discussions of
how anchoritic literature is perceived by contemporary authors (medieval
and, perhaps, modern) and how the anchoritic experience is transmitted
through various genres and authors. Please send abstracts of twenty-minute
papers.
3. (Re)Drawing the Boundaries of the Anchoritic (roundtable): This
roundtable will include approximately five people discussing how we as
scholars define what we mean by the term anchoritic within the context of
our own work, the classroom, and beyond. Papers for the roundtable should
be no longer than ten minutes to allow for full discussion and interaction
among the speakers.
