Ethnobilia: The Things We Carry (Proposed Panel)
Society for the Study of Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States
18th Annual Conference, March 10-14, 2004, San Antonio, Texas
Conference Theme: Transfronterismo: Crossing Ethnic Borders in U.S.
Literatures

We invite paper abstracts for the proposed panel ³Ethnobilia: The Things We
Carry.² This panel will discuss the cultural reminders or artifacts that
border crossers carry on their journeys. These artifacts might be reminders
of home or evidence of the transgression itself. Arjun Appadurai points out
that ³commodities, like persons, have social lives.² How are things imbued
with cultural significance? How do objects become storied? What do these
things say about the people who carry them? Do these objects signify
membership in a particular community? Are they relics of a remembered past?
Do they preserve or maintain history?

Please send 250-word abstracts by 15 October 2003.

Proposals and inquiries should be submitted in duplicate by surface mail to:
