THE ANGLO-SAXON CHRONICLE
An interdisciplinary conference

Centre for Medieval Studies, University of York
28th-30th July 2004

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle has long had a central place in the study of
early medieval England. It is the earliest vernacular chronicle in western
Europe, a near-contemporary record of political history from the ninth to
the twelfth centureis, a major component of the Old ENglish prose corpus
and an important document for the development of Old English poetry. The
time is ripe for a conference that will review the state of our knowledge
about the Chronicle, bringing together a wide range of scholarly
approaches and suggesting directions for future research.

Proposals for papers are invited on all aspects of the Anglo-Saxon
Chronicle, including
* the production of the Chronicle texts
* the Chronicle in its historiographical contexts
* the literary and linguistic qualities of the Chronicle
* the Chronicle as a piece of historical evidence

The conference will stress the plurality of the Chronicle - multiple texts
produced in multiple places, times, and political contexts - and of
Chronicle studies. Thus papers are welcome that move between the areas of
investigation suggested above, that explore differences and dissonances
between Chronicle texts, and that approach the Chronicle from less
familiar perspectives.

Abstracts of around 200 words should be sent by 30th November 2003 to
Alice Cowen, <adc108@york.ac.uk> (Centre for Medieval Studies, University
of York, King's Manor, York, YO1 7EP, UK).
