Cormac McCarthy Area Call for Papers
The 25th annual meeting of the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture/American
Culture Association in San Antonio, Texas to be held April 7-10, 2004, at
the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter.
The Cormac McCarthy Area solicits paper proposals from professors, graduate
students, scholars, citizens, and other aficionados of McCarthy’s works of
the South and the Border Southwest. Also welcome are proposals for
presentations, discussions and panels organized around common themes or
motifs in McCarthy’s oeuvre.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
-The function of landscape in McCarthy’s Southwest Novels
-The encroachment of the federal government in The Orchard Keeper
-The transition of All the Pretty Horses into film, its implications, etc.
-Swine as harbingers of human death in Outer Dark
-Violence and narcissism in Child of God
-McAnally Flats as Suttree’s Purgatory in Suttree
-The role of canines in Blood Meridian
Application Process:
Please send an abstract of 150 words to marcbarrington@hotmail.com before
November, 2003. With your abstract, please include your email address, your
address, your university affiliation (if applicable), the days you are able
to present (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday—AM or PM), and your
presentation title.
