The Babel Study Group for Translation Studies was founded at the University
of California, Los Angeles, in 1996 with the goal of facilitating the
intellectual and professional growth of graduate students dedicated to the
practice and theory of translation. We are pleased to announce an
international conference to be held the weekend of January 23-25, 2004 on
the UCLA campus. Applicants chosen to participate will receive travel
expenses and accommodation.
We seek applications from graduate students currently engaged in translating
previously untranslated works. The conference will consist of 1) workshops
enabling students to present their work to fellow translators for open
discussion, 2) plenary addresses by Efraín Kristal (UCLA, author of
Invisible Work: Borges as Translator) and Douglas Messerli (founder of Green
Integer Press), and 3) a practical session on publishing translations led by
Michael Henry Heim (UCLA, translator of East-Central European literature).
We are accepting applications from students translating into English from
any language and from poetry, prose, or drama. We especially encourage
translations from under-represented languages.
Applications should include: 1) a CV, 2) a one-and-a-half-spaced
five-to-ten-page sample of the translation to be presented, 3) the
corresponding passage in the original, and 4) a single-spaced one-page
precis offering an introduction to the author and the work and explaining
the importance of the project. The jury will consist of graduate-student
peer-reviewers and faculty members representing a wide spectrum of languages
and literary traditions.
Please e-mail all application materials as attachments to Kelly Austin at
babel@humnet.ucla.edu by November 15, 2003. If you have difficulty scanning
the original, please send a photocopy to Kelly Austin, Comparative
Literature, 212 Royce Hall, University of California, Los Angeles, Los
Angeles, California, 90095-1536.
The conference is sponsored by the Center for Student Programming, UCLA.
