This conference brings Virginia Woolf back to Bloomsbury in order to revisit
Woolf's links to the place and the group which helped to inspire her life of
writing. Woolf's life and work will be explored in relation to her Bloomsbury
contemporaries and experiences of London. Themes for papers may involve Woolf
and:

- The Hogarth Press
- Bloomsbury & other London-based Artist/Writer Groups
- Modernism
- Freud in Bloomsbury
- Psychoanalytic Perspectives
- Women in Bloomsbury

- Gender Theory
- Queer Theory
- Sexuality & Sexual Relations
- Race, Class & Elitism
- Politics, Political Affiliations & Activism
- Social Consciousness & Education
- Representations of London
- Ideas of Space and Place
- New Critical & Theoretical Approaches

The conference will include a range of keynote addresses, plenary panels and
parallel panel sessions. In addition to the stimulus provided by speakers'
papers and panel discussions, there will be other events, including
Woolf-inspired performances and tours to Bloomsbury Group residences. Between sessions,
delegates might also enjoy a nomadic wander through the squares in which the
Bloomsberries lived, and loved.

*Bloomsbury in Performance*, an evening of Woolf-inspired dance, theatre and
music, curated by the Stephen Pelton Dance Theatre at the Bloomsbury Theatre

*A Portrait of Virginia Woolf* by the IVWS Players presented at the
Bloomsbury Banquet on Friday 25 June;
A talk and poetry reading by Andrew McNeillie on Saturday 26 June.

BLOOMSBURY TOURS:
A pre-conference excursion to Monks House, Rodmell on Tuesday 22 June led by
Maire McQueeney, author of Virginia Woolf's Rodmell and afternoon walking
tours of the Bloomsbury area and Bloomsbury Group residences during the
conference.

CALL FOR PAPER AND PANEL PROPOSALS:
Paper and panel proposals should incorporate one or more of the themes listed
above. Panels will include three participants, preferably from different
institutions, who will be allocated no more than 15-20 minutes each to make their
presentations. Please ensure the scope of proposed paper(s) is appropriate to
the time allowed. For paper proposals, please submit an abstract of no more
than 250 words. For panel proposals, please submit an abstract of no more than
250 words for each paper to be presented by each of the three panel
participants along with the proposed title of the panel.
All submissions should include the paper/panel title(s) and name(s), contact
details and institutional affiliation(s) of participants. Submissions in
electronic form are preferred. Please send submissions by email to
VWoolf2004@aol.com, either included in the body of the email message or as an email attachment
(in Word DOC or RTF format). If you are unable to email your proposal, you
may post a PC-compatible floppy disk containing the document (in Word DOC or RTF
format) and/or a hard copy to the address above. Hard copy submissions must
include a cover page with name(s), paper/panel title(s) and other details, as
above, and a second page with title(s) and the abstract(s) but no name(s).
All submissions will be assessed anonymously.
