CALL FOR PAPERS

Graduate Centre for Study of Drama
 University of Toronto

Shifting Tides:
Atlantic Canadian Theatre Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

March 25 – 28, 2004

In the spring of 2004, the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama,
University of Toronto, will host a national conference on the topic of
theatre and drama in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island,
and Newfoundland. This multifaceted exchange between academics,
artists, students, and administrators will feature keynote presentations
by some of the most experienced, respected, and celebrated figures from
throughout the Atlantic region. Invited papers from the region’s
foremost scholars will address issues of theatre tradition, commercial
survival, theatre in education, and contemporary translation. Some of
the most vital and progressive theatre companies from Canada’s East
Coast will offer staged performances of their current projects, as well
as hands-on workshops for conference participants. Atlantic playwrights
with national and international reputations will read from their works.
Ultimately, this celebration of Atlantic Canada is intended to increase
the awareness of, and appreciation for, the diverse and innovative
theatrical activity in that region by overcoming the
boundaries—physical, cultural, and disciplinary—between participating
academics, practitioners, and audiences.

We invite proposals for 20 minute scholarly presentations on any aspect
of Atlantic Canadian theatre and drama, including theatre history,
theoretical analysis, and dramatic literature in production. We also
invite proposals for 20 minute non-academic presentations on issues
related to theatrical and dramatic practice and production throughout
the Atlantic region. Please forward proposals in the form of 250 word
(maximum) abstracts, preferably by e-mail, to the Conference Chair:
