In recent years the representation of whiteness as a normative racial
category has received increasing critical attention. This panel explores
strategies of film and television makers who have attempted to de-center
the construct of the white race. What visual and narrative devices are
used to question the privileged position of whiteness in Western
societies? I am particularly interested in films from migrant film makers
in Europe and the United States, but all proposals examining the problem
of whiteness in film or television are welcome.

Please email inquiries and abstracts (by August 31) to Tim Gruenewald
