Violence and Domestic Comedy

Two Sessions: Inviting papers that address ways in which comedy and
violence merge, particularly ways in which comedy is used to defuse
violence. How do victims of violence become empowered through comic
defenses, as when crossdressing is used to thwart rape, or an abusive
husband is comically humiliated? How do comic genres such as fabiau
empower women, and how is that empowerment constructed? What makes a
medieval audience laugh, and what does that laughter tell us about
medieval life, or ourselves, for that matter? These concerns may be
addressed from historical as well as literary perspectives and range
from the early Middle Ages to the sixteenth century.
