Thirteenth Annual Symposium
Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Studies

19-21 February, 2004
To celebrate the Symposium's thirteenth incarnation, the conference seeks
to examine a range of phenomena related to superstition in various
cultural and historical contexts. Proposals addressing any world region or
representational form are welcome; interdisciplinary projects are
especially encouraged. Topics might include, although are not limited to:
Abjection
Fate and Destiny
The Supernatural
Fear and Loathing
Animism and Shamanism
Magical and Sacred Numbers
Idolatry
Folklore
Witchcraft
Healing Practices
Power of the Unknown
The nature of evidence, proof, and belief
The Occult
Keynote Speaker:
Richard Kieckhefer
author of Magic in the Middle Ages (Cambridge, 1989) and several books
on witchcraft
Please send abstracts for 20-minute papers, as well as proposals for
alternative presentation formats (e.g. full panels, round tables, debates,
performance, etc.). This is a discussion-oriented conference with no
concurrent panels.
