Call for Papers: Northeast Modern Language Association Annual
Conference
March 3-7, 2004
Omni William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh, PA
Panel Title: Imagining the Salem Witchcraft Trials
>From Cotton Mather in the seventeenth century to Mary Wilkins Freeman in
the nineteenth, and Arthur Miller in the twentieth, American writers and
audiences seem haunted by the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. But why
does this event retain such a prominent place in our national
imagination? What political purposes does the narratives serve? Why are
some representations of the trials more privileged than others? Whose
interests do these privileged narratives serve and how?
This panel seeks papers that examine representations of the Salem
witchcraft trials of 1692, particularly studies foregrounding race,
class, and/or gender and therefore exploring the political functions
performed by one of the many literary, historiographical, or popular
reenactments of this infamous event.
