CFP: Monastic Revival in 19th C. England (9/15/03; K'zoo, 5/6/03-5/9/04)

"Rebuilding the Waste Places: The Revival of Monasticism in 19th C.
England"

The nineteenth century in England saw not only the first sustained efforts
to restore Roman Catholic monasticism, but also some of the first
experiments with Anglican religious orders. Many of these were founded in
areas that had previously held abbeys or priories before the dissolution
by Henry VII. Papers are sought which address this sudden rebirth of
monasticism. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

1. Differences in 19th C foundations from medieval traditions?
2. Anglican monasteries that were more "Roman than Rome?"
3. Gender/Sexuality and the new monasticism
4. Failed experiments in monasticism
5. Conversions to Rome
6. Tensions between church and state

Please submit a one-page abstract (and please include complete contact
information).

Papers should be no more than 20 minutes in reading length. The deadline
for submissions is September 15, 2003. Submissions and inquiries may be
