UPDATE: Artists from Pittsburgh (9/15/03; NEMLA, 3/3/04-3/07/04)

Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2003 08:32:34 EDT

Update: Deadline extended

The Northeast Modern Language Association's 35th Annual Convention. It is
to be held at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh PA March 3-7,
2004.

Not everyone knows that the first banana split was invented in Latrobe,
PA, or that the first Big Mac was created in Uniontown. However, many
people recognize names such as: Henry Mancini, Perry Como, and Mister
Rogers. It is surprising that many of the artists who have contributed to
the creative influences in society have had their beginnings in
Pittsburgh. Nelly Bly helped pave the way for journalists; Rachel Carson
and Gertrude Stein have made important contributions to literature;
television has had the privilege of letting Mister Rogers into everyone's
neighborhood; the world of dance has been blessed with the likes of Martha
Graham and Gene Kelly, as well as the music industry with the first
professional song writer Stephen Collins Foster; Henry Mancini, Oscar
Levant and Lorin Maazel present their own individual styles of music ;
without David O Selznik, there would not be Gone with the Wind, and as far
as actors and comedians go, Dennis Miller, Jeff Goldblum and Michael
Keaton have graced stages and screens and August Wilson has given us many
memorable plays. When we go through the list of famous Pittsburghers and
those who have risen to almost legend status, the name of Andy Warhola has
been described as the "most influential artist of the 20th century" (<A
HREF="http://pittsburgh.about.com/">http://pittsburgh.about.com</A>).

Each participant will give a 15-minute presentation covering the creative
impact of an artist from Pittsburgh and the resulting influence on music,
art, literature, or theatre.

The deadline for 500 word abstracts has been extended to September 15,
2003. You can send your abstract to: Karen Holleran, 17631 290th Street,
Long Grove, IA 52756. Or, send via email: KEHProf_at_aol.com.
