CALL FOR PAPERS

Cultural Transmission and Translation in Utopian Literature

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute papers to be presented at a proposed
session of Translatio, or Transmission of Culture, the Arizona Center for
Medieval and Renaissance Studies Conference, Tempe, Arizona, February 12-14,
2004.

Papers in this panel will seek to explore various conceptualizations of
cultural transmission and translation in medieval and Renaissance utopian
writing. Utopian texts frequently define ideal commonwealths in terms of how
cultural, religious, and scientific knowledge is best transmitted and mediated
in society. Since they represent (putatively) ideal societies, these texts
suggest or resist the possibility of translating the social, political,
cultural, religious, and intellectual values of their fictional utopias into
the real world. Furthermore, given the social critique implicit in utopian
literature, reader reception is particularly interesting, and may involve the
translation of utopian texts into different languages for new audiences and the
transmission of utopian ideas within diverse cultural contexts. Papers may take
up one or more of the above topics, or investigate other aspects of cultural
transmission and translation in utopian writing.

Selected papers will be considered for publication. See the conference website
for more details: http://www.asu.edu/clas/acmrs/conferences.html
