CFP: American Violence, American Consumption
NEMLA, March 3-7, 2004, Pittsburgh, PA
This panel focuses upon contemporary American novelists, artists, and
filmmakers of radical intent who confront the dynamic between the
violence which is seemingly endemic to American life and the promises of
fulfillment made by the consumer culture in which we live. How do these
writers and artists theorize a relationship between these two forces?
How is that relationship informed, structured, and limited by the deep
matrix emerging from race, class, and gender categories in America? And
how does the intersection of violence and consumption map onto larger
yet less visible issues of global production, exploitation, and
revolution in this age of millennial capitalism? Of special interest are
critical analyses of texts and works that are not easily absorbed by
mass media and popular tastes, as well as oppositional readings of works
that are products of or have been co-opted by dominant corporate media.
