CLOSING THE GAP:
THE ROLE OF RACE IN EDUCATION FIFTY YEARS AFTER BROWN
The focus of this conference is on research and innovative programs and =
techniques which have proven effective in minority education, and =
particularly the education of African American students. We are also =
interested in innovative theories and approaches to thinking about the =
achievement gap between minority and majority students.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. William B. Harvey (Vice President and Director, =
Office of Minorities in Higher Education, American Council on Education). =
A Ph.D. from Rutgers University, Dr. Harvey is a 30-year veteran of =
postsecondary education, and has written and spoken on various topics =
dealing with diversity in higher education, including tolerance, racism =
and race relations on campus, and obstacles facing African American and =
Hispanic scholars and students. Harvey's publications include Grass Roots =
and Glass Ceilings: African American Administrators in Predominately White =
Colleges and Universities, 1999; New Directions for Community Colleges: =
Creating and Maintaining a Diverse Faculty, 1994; and Affirmative =
Rhetoric, Negative Action: African American and Hispanic Faculty at =
Predominately White Universities, 1989.

RECEPTION: short presentation and opportunity to meet with nationally =
renowned veteran civil rights lawyer Oliver Hill, Sr. (one of the NAACP =
litigators in the Brown vs. Board of Education case)
We invite proposals from K-12, college and university faculty, and =
graduate students for panels, conference papers, workshops, and multi-media=
presentations that address any of the aspects of the overall theme of =
"Closing the Educational Achievement Gap" (deadline for proposals: =
November 12, 2003). Each panel will be one and one half hours long, and =
will consist of three to four panelists, a chair (who should also be a =
presenter) and/or a respondent. Possible panel themes include:

=B7 Race, gender, and education
=B7 Race, class, and culture
=B7 Race and teacher education
=B7 Race and theories of intelligence
=B7 Integration vs. voluntary segregation
