A Call for Papers on Food and Culture for the Southwest Regional Chapter =
of the Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association
San Antonio, Texas April 7-10, 2004
The 25th Annual Conference of the Southwest region of the Popular =
Culture Association/American Culture Association will be held in San =
Antonio from April 7-10, 2004. The Southwestern region of PCA/ACA =
accepts scholarly papers from academics, students, and professionals for =
presentation. The PCA's mission is "to promote an innovative and =
nontraditional academic movement in Humanities and Social Sciences, to =
provide an outlet for scholars, writers, and others interested in =
popular culture, to share ideas in a professional atmosphere, and to =
have papers presented at meetings."
The Food and Culture group of the Southwest PCA/ACA is soliciting =
presentations of 15 minutes from food scholars, food scientists, =
activists, farmers, chefs, and others serious about food. Over the past =
several years the quality of the food and culture sessions has attracted =
participants from all over the USA. Join the food and culture area for =
the Southwest region at this joint meeting with the national PCA and ACA =
conference by sending an abstract before 11/15/03. Presentations can be =
on any aspect of food and culture, but they should have a main point, =
interesting data (ethnography, historical data, fiction, cookbooks, =
films, etc.), and a theoretical or analytical dimension.
In the past, we have heard great presentations on fast food; nutritional =
and dietary science; food marketing and advertising; food magazines; =
cookbooks; restaurant menus; food television shows; food films; eating =
disorders; diner culture; organic and natural foods; the slowfood =
movement; and gendered, regional, and ethnic food issues. This year we =
are additionally interested in
a.. presentations that attempt to define the field of "food studies"
b.. presentations that examine methodological questions within the =
study of food and culture
c.. presentations that interrogate the position of the consumer (i.e. =
her/his empowerment/disempowerment) within foodways
d.. presentations that examine globalization in terms of food (or vice =
versa)
e.. presentations that highlight the role of borders within foodways
f.. presentations that reveal the discourse of pain underlying global, =
industrial food production
g.. presentations that question the status of the body, particularly =
in the wake of health crises resulting from industrial food production
Deadline: November 15, 2003
Please send (by email as an attachment or by postal service) an abstract =
of 200-300 words, single-spaced, outlining your presentation idea, along =
with a biographical sketch of 100 words or less, and your contact =
information (mailing address, phone number, and email address) to Lynn =
Houston, email: Lynn.Houston_at_selu.edu, Southeastern Louisiana Univ., =
English Dept., SLU 10861, Hammond, LA, 70402, Tel.: (985) 549-3106, Fax: =
(504) 549-5021.
Proposals for Panels: If you wish to propose a panel or a session with =
multiple panels you should solicit abstracts from possible presenters =
and send them to us by the deadline. You should send us: 1) presentation =
abstracts, 2) presenter bios, 3) a presentation schedule divided into =
panels of 3-4 presentations each, and 2) a 100-200 word explanation of =
the rationale or scope of your session proposal. While we try our best =
to organize the panels according to your specifications, they may be =
rearranged according to the panel needs of other presenters.
