UPDATE/ LAST CALL FOR PAPERS

Contemporary Holocaust Fiction

NEMLA, Pittsburgh, March 3-7, 2004

The past several years have seen a resurgence of interest in the =
Holocaust by younger writers around the world. This panel will aim to =
consider the cultural significance of these novels at the beginning of =
the 21st century, as well as the strategies these texts use to represent =
the Holocaust in light of recent debates over Holocaust history and =
representation. What happens to the Holocaust novel as the events it =
depicts recede further and further from view? Have its objectives and =
strategies changed? =20

Topics for consideration might include the following:

--How postmodernism has influenced Holocaust representation

--The effects of trauma theory on Holocaust criticism=20

--The relevance of the Holocaust to this particular cultural moment;=20

--The treatment of history versus memory

--Thematic shifts in representation from the immediate postwar period to =
the present,=20

--Hybridization: the convergence of fiction and documentary in Holocaust =
novels

--Third generation concerns and how they differ from those of preceding =
generations

Papers on novels in translation are welcome; all papers must be written =
in English. Please send 250-word abstracts by 9/15 via e-mail (in the =
body of the message or as an attachment).
