2003.

We Don't Need Another Hero: Revising Masculinity in Post-WWII British
Fiction

This panel explores the male hero in British literature during an era of =
economic, sexual, and political transformation. Of particular interest =
are works that respond to an older model of heroism, especially by =
questioning the role of the individual male as the driving force of =
history.

Novels of interest here might re-write celebrated stories of action and =
adventure, or question the perspective of the romantic protagonist or =
soldier hero. Along with works that challenge traditional gender roles, =
however, the panel might also consider how masculinity has been =
re-mythologized in late twentieth century fiction; the applicants for =
the panel will determine the specific direction our discussion takes.

The NEMLA conference will be held from March 3-7, 2004 in Pittsburgh, =
PA.

Please include your paper proposals in the body of your email (not as =
attachments), and send them to Jeff Roessner at the following address: =
jroessner_at_mercyhurst.edu. I will confirm receipt of your proposal.
