February 27, 2004
The Women's Studies Program, Black World Studies Program, International
Studies Program, American Studies Program, and the Latin American Studies
Program at Miami University are pleased to sponsor this event. The
symposium will showcase work that examines the intersections among race,
gender, class, sexuality, and any interrogations of identity politics in
scholarship, activism, practice, cultural representation, and experience.
Faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and community
professionals are all encouraged to participate.
Keynote speakers are AnaLouise Keating, coeditor of This Bridge Called
Home: Political Visions for Transformations and associate professor of
Women’s Studies at Texas Women’s College, and Itumeleng Kimane, Senior
Lecturer, Department of Social Anthropology/Sociology, National University
of Lesotho, Liaison for the OSSRESA. Her presentations include “HIV/AIDS
and Gender” and “A Southern African Challenge: Information System, Data
Bases and Sustaining Institutional Capacity.”
Possible presentations include theoretical and/or practical exploration of
the intersections between at least two of the social locations of race,
gender, class and sexuality. A variety of formats is possible, including
films or performance pieces, roundtable discussions, and paper
presentations. We encourage proposals on works in progress as well as
completed works. We are interested in presentations by activists,
artists, scholars, and practitioners from all disciplinary and
interdisciplinary perspectives.
Please submit a 200-300 word abstract of either a panel proposal or
individual presentation. Include the title of the panel or presentation,
name(s) and address(es) (including e-mail) of the presenter(s), preferred
format, and audio-visual equipment requests. Submissions must be received
