Understanding Sentimentalism Through the Lens of Lesser-Known Works

Based upon readings of a few important sentimental works, scholars have
reached certain conclusions about the definitions and cultural work of
sympathy and sentimentalism. But do those categories become unfixed and
more complex when considered through the lenses of lesser-discussed
sentimental works? What might authors like Mary Jane Holmes, E.D.E.N.
Southworth, Caroline Lee Hentz, Grace King, Alice Cary, Caroline Chesebro,
Mary Virginia Terhune, Ann Stephens, and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps
contribute to our understanding of the category "sentimental" and its
primary strategy of "sympathy"? Send 1-2 page paper proposals by email
only to both Marianne Noble and Cindy Weinstein at mnoble@american.edu and
caw@hss.caltech.edu by January 10th.
