BEAT MEETS EAST:

AN INTERNATIONAL AND INTERDISCIPLINARY

CONFERENCE ON THE AGE OF SPONTANEITY

JUNE 2-5, 2004

COLLEGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES

SICHUAN UNIVERSITY

CHENGDU, CHINA

The organizing committee invites papers an all aspects of the Beat
Generation. Papers on Jack Kerouac, Diane di Prima, Allen Ginsberg,
Joyce Johnson, Bob Kaufman, Carolyn Cassady, Ted Joans, Lenore Kandel,
William Burroughs, Joanne Kyger, Gary Snyder, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Ken
Kesey and other writers too numerous to mention are welcomed. The
conference also welcomes papers that recognize the Beat Generation
within the larger context of the Age of Spontaneity, including papers
that focus on music, painting, film, and photography. Papers about
cultural and historical contexts as well as sociological and religious
perspectives are highly relevant.

Participants in the conference are responsible for their own
transportation, lodging, and related expenses, but as host of the
conference, Sichuan University will provide guidance and assistance. In
addition, Sichuan University will provide guided visits to cultural
sites in Sichuan Province, including the panda reserve, the Chinese
opera, and sites connected to Buddhism. A special optional trip to Lhasa
(Tibet) is available at a reasonable additional cost.

Keynote speakers will be announced as arrangements are completed.

Please send a one-page abstract of your proposed twenty-minute
presentation. Please include the title of your presentation and indicate
your academic affiliation.
