Call for Papers
Contemporary Cultures: Culture and Identity in
Practice and Theory
A postgraduate conference at the University of
Edinburgh
6 March 2004
We are now calling for papers for a one-day
postgraduate conference hosted by the School of
Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University
of Edinburgh. The conference will provide an
opportunity for postgraduate students working in
different cultural locations and media to share their
work with researchers in related fields.
¡¥Culture¡¦ and ¡¥identity¡¦ emerge as contested terms
within contemporary academic discourse, and their
meanings have been shaped by activities of cultural
production and theoretical debate. The conference will
examine the relationships between cultural activities
and developments in cultural theory, expressions of
culture and identity across a range of contemporary
media and cultural locations, the production and
reproduction of culture in national and international
contexts, and the problematics of defining ¡¥cultural
practice¡¦ and ¡¥cultural theory¡¦.
Topics may include but are not limited to:
„h Identity issues in language and translation
„h Global capitalism and cultural capital
„h Theorising identity and culture
„h Questions of race, gender and class
„h Sexual identity and queer communities
„h Postcolonialisms and identities between cultures
„h Culture and identity in contemporary film
„h Cyberculture and the production of new identities.
Proposals should be a maximum of 250 words and include
a provisional title, and should be submitted by 15
December 2003. Submissions by email are encouraged.
