Abstract/Proposals by 1 December 2003

Conference (Meeting jointly with the PCA/ACA)
San Antonio, Texas April 7-10, 2004
San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter

San Antonio, Texas 78205

Proposals are being accepted for an area of study related to contemporary
American Indian culture—American Indians Today. American Indians are adept
at borrowing from other cultures and making it “Indian.” For example,
popular culture is reflected in “49” songs (one-eyed ford) or beadwork on
barrettes depicting Minnie Mouse alongside traditional artifacts that
reflect a specific tribal culture.

Proposals that address the merging of traditional American Indian culture
with that of the American culture are encouraged. An examination of
influences and adaptations in all areas is welcomed including: the oral
tradition; painting; sculpture; weaving; basketry; pottery; dance; music
(drum, flute, songs, etc.); fashion; writing; philosophy; identity;
artifacts; American Indian foods; and, imagery (real or imagined) of
contemporary tribal peoples influenced by American popular culture.

Authors who have appropriated an American Indian identity have a direct
bearing on the validity and reliability of American Indian resources. A
book such as The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter purported to be
a “true story.” Later, the author comes under scrutiny because he is not
American Indian. The book is found on several recommended reading lists. Is
authenticity a topical consideration?

Send an abstract of 100-250 words. Inquiries regarding any topical area or
the formation of a panel presentation should be directed to me and I will be
pleased to accommodate. Deadline extended for submission to December 1,
2003:
