CALL FOR PAPERS FOR INTERNATIONAL THEATRE CONFERENCE
INTERVENTIONIST THEATRE: EMPOWERMENT AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Dates: 15-18 July 2004
Venue: University of Leeds, Bretton Hall Campus, West Bretton, Wakefield,
West Yorkshire, England WF4 4LG
This international and interdisciplinary conference on applied
interventionist theatre will focus on the role of contemporary theatre and
performance as a vehicle for empowering individuals and groups in relation
to issues of social conflict and resolution. Thinking through and across
boundaries existing between academia and the wider community, it is
envisaged that panels, performances and workshops will address areas such as
Theatre and the Regeneration of Communities, Theatre and the Homeless,
Theatre in Schools, Theatre and Health, Theatre and Therapy, Theatre and
Prisons and Probation, Theatre and Public Services, as well as Theatre and
International Conflict.
Although some conference sessions will be composed of traditional academic
panels, we would like to encourage proposals offering creative and
cutting-edge approaches that emphasise engagement, performance, and
discussion. In addition to individual submissions, we will consider complete
panel proposals.
The conference will be held in the new theatre complex at the Bretton Hall
site of the University of Leeds, which is set in a beautiful landscaped park
with a Nature Reserve and is home to the internationally renowned Yorkshire
Sculpture Park. It is hoped that a number of organisations concerned with
community outreach work will be represented on site via interactive
information booths and workshops, including the West Yorkshire Police, the
West and South Yorkshire Fire Services, together with the Prison and
Probation services.
Abstracts and proposals of no more than 300 words are invited to arrive by
31 January 2004. Presentations will be 20 minutes in length with workshops
to run up to a maximum of 90 minutes; performances by negotiation, with
proposals needing to indicate expected running time. Email submissions are
preferred (MS Word format) and should be sent to Linda Smith
pculs@leeds.ac.uk Please include a short bio (100 words) and full contact
details. Postal submissions should be sent to Linda Smith, School of
Performance and Cultural Industries, University of Leeds, Bretton Hall
